A Special Halloween Treat Inspired by Edgar Allen Poe

Most of you know I LOVE to write psychological thrillers, probably more than any of the other genres I write. So, I though I'd offer a little piece of flash fiction I wrote long before Transcend and my first journey into the mind of madness....

I called it, the Research Assistant. But really, it is best titled Heartache:

Ellen waited in anticipation for the class to end.  Dr. Jenkins had promised her a chance to be his research assistant on one of his current projects – some ultra secret venture in the field of human engineering.
Or so she thought.
Dr. Jenkins was a bit of a rock star at the university.  His research had made its way into mainstream media and he spent many days making appearances on Oprah and the Nightly News.  The university ate up the publicity, blindly throwing money at each of his new endeavors.
Ellen watched her professor as he finished his lecture on the biochemistry of emotions.  She fantasized about him often - his dark hair and steely eyes making their way into her dreams most nights.  She didn’t mind that he was twice her age.  In fact, she liked the cool confidence of his maturity.
“Ellen, please stay after class. We need to talk.”  Dr Jenkins’ seductive voice sent chills up her spine, causing her to tremble.
Flashes of her previous dreams – his lips on her neck, the feel of his skin on hers – pulsed through her body.  She swallowed hard, forcing the sound to come from her voice.  “No problem.”
She blushed as the fantasy continued in her thoughts.  Her classmates chuckled, amused at the apparent crush between their professor and Ellen.  She ignored them.
She always ignored them.
The students hurried out the classroom.  Ellen starred at her professor, excited at the prospect of spending time alone with him.  Her heart pounded in her chest as he approached her.“Shall we go to my lab?”  he asked.   “I want you to see what you’re getting yourself into before you agree to this.”
Ellen fought back her fantasies, her body warming in his presence.  “Yeah, sure.”  She walked next to him, barely able to breath, let alone move.
They walked in silence through the labyrinth of corridors to the lab.  Ellen forced herself to move forward, her body quivering at the thought of what lay ahead.  They reached the lab in minutes.  Dr. Jenkins unlocked the door and ushered her in.
“So, Ellen, are you curious as to what this project is about?”
Ellen nodded as she glanced around the room.  The walls of the lab were adorned with shelves of specimen jars.   The center of the room looked more like a surgical suite, with a large table, a tray of sharp tools and bottles filled with various liquids.  Ellen took in the scene, confusion mixing with her desire.
She cleared her throat as she moved her eyes from the surgical table to the strange jars on the wall.   “Um, Dr. Jenkins, what are those?”
“They are part of my experiments,” he answered, his voice mesmerizing.
“But what are they?”
“Dissected hearts.”  Dr. Jenkins paused and looked at Ellen.  “You see, I believe I have found a way to stop human heartache. Completely.”
Ellen’s palms started to sweat as she stared at her professor, unable to turn away.  “Really,” she choked, unable to say more.
“Yes,” Dr Jenkins continued, his voice detached.  “But, I need to conduct a few more experiments to be sure.  That’s why I need your help.”
He walked to Ellen and stroked her hair.  Chills ran down her spine as alarm bells burned in her mind.  Get out, her thoughts screamed.  She stared at him, paralyzed.  Dr Jenkins continued to stroke her hair, as her heart hammered in her chest.   She gulped, desire giving away to the fear weaving through her mind.  She opened her mouth to speak, the sound dying in her throat.
He put his finger on her lips. “Shh.  Oh Ellen, I really need you for this project.  All it will take is your heart.”
Dr. Jenkins turned, locked the lab door and took a scalpel from the table.  He turned to face her, scalpel in hand.  “So, Ellen, are you ready to be part of my research?”
Ellen’s heart pounded wildly in her chest, the last of desire engulfed by her own terror.  She ran to the back of the room, trying to get away.  But there was only one way out.  And Dr. Jenkins was barring it.
“Now, now, Ellen.  I know you want this.”
Her eyes widened, horror erasing everything else.  Dr. Jenkins bolted for her, wrapping his arms around her waist and pulling her in as she pounded her fists against him.
Ellen’s screams echoed down the empty corridor of the university.  Unanswered.

Happy Halloween everyone!

Zane is used to trusting his mind, his wisdom and his angelic senses. But these attributes are no help with Nessa. He has no way to be certain of her identity, no way to know the truth. That is, unless he listens to the one thing he has refused to acknowledge throughout his existence - he feelings for Nesy.

The Tour, NaNo, Giveaways....Oh My!!

First, I wish all of my East Coast buddies a safe day. Hopefully the storm is not ravaging too badly outside your window today.

Now, I have so much to talk about, to report...

First - how many of you have tried the Angelic Order Quiz??? So far, I know of several Mediators, Sentinals and even an UnHoly or two. Click here to complete the FB quiz. And be sure to let me know how yours turned out.

On to NaNo news. We are a mere two days from NaNo - the month in which a few crazy writers commit to drafting a 50K novel in 30 days. It sounds daunting I know...and in fact, it is! I have attempted it three other times. Completed it only once. This year will also be a stretch. I won't be posting any word counts until after Nov 9.

Why you ask? I have major edits (final edits) due on Nov 9 for my nonfiction, so nothing happens until then are completed.

Then I am all about NaNo.

So, how will I prepare to write roughly 2400 words a day? By outlining, of course! (Those that know me knew I would answer it this way...)

So today and tomorrow are all about a skeleton outline to guide my way through NaNo. Since I am using the month to write the last in the Requiem series, it won't be too hard...maybe. The story took some HUGE twists and turns in book #2...

Which leads me to Libera Me news. First, I don't think it'll actually be released tomorrow. Probably more like Thursday or Friday. But that won't stop the tour...

And here are the stops for the week:

I will have them on my side bar too...
And don't forget about the contests:

The Changing Nature of Friendships

I normally use this blog to talk about writing, books, promotion and the like. But this morning I woke up in a highly contemplative mood. Nothing new, really. Those that know me know that I tend to overthink just about everything. It's part of my normal intensity and something I've grown accustomed to.

This morning's contemplation was about changing friendships, support systems, etc. My daughter had I had a great conversation about this last night - the way in which her support system has changed over the last year. We talked about how mine had shifted and changed, about our feelings with such changes. She said something to me that I thought  was so true...
"It isn't about missing my friend, it's about missing the concept of that friendship. I mean, she's changed. So it isn't her I miss really. It's what we were to each other that I miss."

So wise, right?!?

Friendships do ebb and flow over time. They change and deepen. And sometimes they fade away all together. It's the natural cycle of things. These changes aren't inherently bad, but they do throw me off for a while as I reestablish my equilibrium and support system. This can be a hard shift for me at times. And I am thankful for the friendships that continue and help support me when I can't seem to find my balance.

My dear friend, Ali Cross, blogged about her Circle of Support this morning, thanking the writing community for their support of her. Likewise, I want to thank my network of support for being there as things shift and change--my writerly friends that understand the unique journey we are on, and my reader friends that show endless devotion through their readership. And finally, to my friends that just "get" me and my intensities.

You are all my compass, my rock. Thank you for being there!

Fane: My cousin, my only flesh and blood anywhere near my age, was being attacked by two boys in the middle of a party. No one was helping her. I crouched in the shadows, indecisive. Blog Chain Time: Books and Movies, Oh My...

I'm so excited to let everyone know that my Blog Chain has been reorganized and re-started! These are such a great group of writers, and I am thrilled to be part of this.

This time the topic comes from Michelle who asked the following:

There are so many book-to-movie adaptations out there. Which are your favorites? Which are your least favorites? Why? Do you make sure you've read a book before you go see the movie adaptation, or do you prefer to read it after, or not at all?

Film adaptations - what a great subject. I love books. And I love movies. But, do I love books that have been turned into movies? The short answer...sometimes.

There have been a couple books-to-movies that are brilliant. The Lord of the Rings trilogy, for example. These are the exception, however. That is not to say that I dislike books that have been turned into movies. I just view them as completely separate things, each to be enjoyed on its own merits. I don't look for comparisons...if I did, I think I would be forever disappointed as typically I enjoy books better than movies.

I was at a book panel event for teens not too long ago in which one of my fellow authors was talking about her experiences going through the book-to-movie process. She said she is really just the "source material" for the screenplay. Most of the actors don't know that the movie they are making was based on a book, nor have they read the book. I think that is true in many cases. Yes, with things like Twilight and Harry Potter, I know the actors read the books. But with lesser known material, this may not always be the case. And that's fine. These are separate mediums in which to tell a story. Both have there pros and cons.

Back to the original question...I love books. I love movies. I will always few both as unique. And yes, there are movies that have inspired me to read the books and visa-versa. But I really do try to keep the two medium separate in my mind.

For more on this topic, check out Sandra's from yesterday, and Katrina's post tomorrow.

Ali Cross's NAME THE BOOK Party and Giveaway!!!

So excited for this week!!! Ali Cross, author of the Desolation Series and an amazing person to boot is launching an amazing giveaway and Name The Book extravaganza. Each of these blogs are featuring a part of an excerpt, character interviews, and more. AND, on each blog is a WORD that is part of a special scavenger hunt.

For my post, Ali shares a special thank you! But before we get to that I wanted to take a moment to thank HER...

For always being there when I need to talk.
For being a great example of perseverance.
For her awesome Ninja spirit.
For the Desolation series.
For the stories still being formed.

Ali is truly a addition to the writing community and I am thrilled to call her a friend! And now for Ali's special guest post:

I’ve sat here and written a dozen posts—in my head. All the while the blank white page mocked me. The blinking cursor singing, “Neener, neener, neener.” Yes, even cursors can mock you when you run out of words.
I don’t usually run out of story-words. I can lay them down like nobody’s business. Writer’s block hasn’t ever (knock on wood) been a problem for me.
No, the words I have trouble finding are the ones that connect me to you—the reader.Because there’s really only two words to be said, and they are, THANK YOU.Thank you for reading.Thank you for taking a chance on my books.Thank you for emailing me, sending me Facebook notes, and, most of all, thank you for leaving reviews.
My stories would only be words on a page, images in my head, if you didn’t read them. When you read them, magic happens. The people and creatures that I’ve only seen in my mind, come to life in yours. You are the magic that gives them life, and for that—thank you!

And now, for the name the book part. Below you will see a mock cover to help put you in the mood for choosing a cover. Your options are DIVINE, CHOSEN, or DESTINED.

You can vote daily for the name of your choice, but you only get one name. Vote on the rafflecopter form below.

a Rafflecopter giveaway
There is more fun too!!! A scavenger hunt. Start at the first blog listed below and read the excerpt. Then hop to each blog to collect the words that will complete the excerpt. Enter the words in the rafflecopter form below and poof! you are entered.

The word for this hop is: FOREVER.

9.  Bookish

I hope you have a blast with the hunt and the name game. And be certain to  read the rest of the books in the series, BECOME and DESOLATE. Trust me, this is an amazing series! Stock Ali to find out more about her and her books:

A Rose By Any Other Name...2.0

I'm so excited to let everyone know that my Blog Chain has been reorganized and re-started! These are such a great group of writers, and I am thrilled to be part of this.

This time the topic comes from Kate who asked the following:

What's in a name? What if Harry Potter had been Larry Snotter? What if Edward was Jacob and Jacob was Edward? What favorite books had character names that you loved or hated? And how do you come up with your own character names?
(And for the record, I had no idea we named our post the same thing! SO FUNNY!!! So I added the "2.0"!)

Names...I love names. I think they often reveal subtle things about the character. For me, I am as careful with the names I pick as I am about anything else. I research the meaning, make certain it matches my intent, etc. Names are kind of a big deal to me.

I remember being asked by someone to change Azza's name back in the early days of Lacrimosa. She wanted me to have it start with something other than "a" since Aydan's name started with "a". Man! What an impossible task. I tried a million options, and nothing! See, Azza was picked deliberately - short for Azzaziel, it is a name from mythology and completely perfect for the character. I couldn't change it. Not even close. It would have felt like changing my own name.

So I fought back, refused and yes...his name is Azza!

I get attached to names with characters. So, to the earlier part of the question, I couldn't change anything about the names of the characters I know and love!

Okay, that's it from me. I've been working 14 hour days and desperately finishing up a project. Time to go back and hide in my day job and writing cave.

For more from us about names, check out Sandra's from yesterday, and Katrina's post tomorrow.

The NEXT BIG Thing (A Tag-fest)

I am thrilled be have been tagged by C.M. Keller, author of Screwing Up Time,  as part of The Next Big Thing, Week 16.

This meme is a chance for authors to tell you what they are currently working on - their next novel. Authors answer several questions and then tag other authors.

Since I am currently working on several projects, including the final in the Requiem series, and other companion/series novels, I thought I would focus this post on something new...something exciting...something different...

What is the working title of your book?
As of right now, the working title is Beautiful Mess.

Where did the idea come from for the book?
After I finished Transcend, I brainstormed two additional psychological thrillers, just in case I found representation and sold the book - I wanted the potential for a multiple book deal. Needless to say, things went a little differently than I had planned. So now that I am exploring the wealth of opportunities authors have now, I decided to dust off the idea and get it written!

What genre does your book fall under?
This is a YA modern psychological thriller.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

This is tough for me. Unlike most authors, I don't use pictures, etc to form my characters. They are formed from the inside out, and I usually don't have a clear picture of their appearance until later in the creative process. So, I am going to have to wait to answer that one, since I am early in the process.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book? about this:
Love and obsession; what do you do when the one protecting you is the one stalking you?

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

Here's the big new tidbit...I am actually going to jump back into the query pond with this one. And if I am unsuccessful, we'll try the small press route, just like I did with the Requiem Series and Transcend.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Well, I am in the first draft process now. Or should I say, I will be once I get past this month and the release of another book and edits on a short. Then it's all about this novel!!!  I do have it fully outlined and about 30% complete. So, I'll finish it up in between NaNo and the end of the year.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Another good question. I would compare it to Transcend and works within the adult psychological thriller genre (Dean Koonz, etc). There are just very few psych-thrillers in YA or NA, so not a lot to compare it too. I guess you could call it .... no, never mind. This one is very unique.

Who or What inspired you to write this book?

This was absolutely inspired by my experience writing Transcend. Working on that book gave me a taste of psychological thrillers. Since then, I have planned out several additional psychological or suspense thrillers that I am looking forward to writing at some point.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

Hmm...I would say this: If you like my other novels, enjoy psychological thrillers and a good mystery, this book is for you. Just be forewarned...the ending will blow you away! (yes, I wrote the ending first this time. LOL - at least, the basics of it.)

There you go - the scoop on my WIP.

Here are some other writers who will share their upcoming works next week:
Lisa Amowitz, author of Breaking Glass
Michelle McLean, author of Treasured Lies
Rebecca Enzor,
